Leonardo da Vinci is considered the greatest genius of the Renaissance. He was a painter, a sculptor, an architect, an engineer, a scientist and a thinker. His are some of the most famous paintings in the world. He was a researcher, a designer of buildings, a discoverer and an inventor, e.g. he invented a flying machine, a lift, a tank and a bicycle. He is also famous for his treatises on painting, architecture, optics or mechanics. Today, we call a person with so many skills and interests a Renaissance Man.
The tank is probably the most famous technical project of Leonardo da Vinci. In 1485, he presented a design of a disc-shaped vehicle resembling a turtle, armed with stone firing cannons all around. The tank could move in any direction with the help of special switches linked to its four wheels. The armour of the tank consisted of metal plates assembled inside and wooden boards on the outside of the vehicle. In his letter to the Duke of Milan, da Vinci boasted: "I can build armed carriages, safe and indestructible, that can approach the enemy and are unmatched by any army unit." This early tank could indeed cause panic and destruction on the battlefields of the 15th century.
Our tank is an exact replica of Leonardo's idea. However, its armour is made of wood only. It was built in a 1:1 scale. It is one of the very few copies in the world that is fully operational and mobile.
